NEW YORK — Bucks guard Cam Thomas said his exit from Brooklyn was driven by a franchise he believes lacked confidence in its players, including himself.
“That’s just who they are. They don’t believe in nobody,” Thomas told the New York Post before Milwaukee’s blowout loss to the Knicks on Friday night at Madison Square Garden.
The 24-year-old was waived on February 5, shortly after the trade deadline, when the Nets were unable to find a deal that met their terms. Because Thomas had accepted a $6 million qualifying offer as a restricted free agent last summer, he effectively held veto power over any trade. His representatives favored a release so he could choose his next destination, and he signed a rest-of-season minimum contract with Milwaukee a few days later.
Asked why Brooklyn lacked faith in him, the former first-round pick responded, “I never asked. I don’t even care anymore. I’m on a different team.” He added that the Nets were “always chasing something.”
Thomas spent four and a half years with the Nets, a period marked by constant roster changes and four different head coaches. He said nothing specific came to mind when reflecting on his Brooklyn tenure.
The shooting guard will enter unrestricted free agency this summer.
