Reinsdorf emphasizes Billy Donovan’s future as Bulls launch front-office search

Chicago Bulls CEO and president Michael Reinsdorf said Tuesday that any candidate for the team’s top basketball operations job must be committed to retaining head coach Billy Donovan, calling the 58-year-old “a Hall of Fame coach” with a proven postseason résumé.

“If Billy wants to be our coach and someone’s not interested in that, then they’re probably not the right candidate for us,” Reinsdorf told reporters during a video press conference.

Decision on Donovan expected soon

Ownership plans to meet with Donovan immediately after the regular season to discuss his future, Reinsdorf said. He expects the matter to be resolved quickly and added that, if Donovan stays, he would like the coach to take a larger role in personnel decisions.

Search firm hired for executive hunt

The Bulls have retained an outside search firm to guide the process of finding a new head of basketball operations. Reinsdorf said the organization intends to “cast a wide net,” a departure from 2020, when Artūras Karnišovas was hired via video interviews without the help of a firm.

Reinsdorf described his ideal hire as “process-oriented,” decisive on roster moves, and an effective communicator both inside and outside the organization. “Our fans have a right to understand what we’re trying to accomplish,” he said.

Long-term focus, not tanking

While February’s trade-deadline moves signaled a rebuild, Reinsdorf reiterated his opposition to deliberate losing. “It’s unfair to the coach, the players and our fans,” he said. Instead, he wants the new front office to build a sustainable contender, aiming for consistent competitiveness rather than short bursts of success.

Buzelis plans to add muscle

Second-year forward Matas Buzelis, a central piece of the team’s future, told the Chicago Tribune he will prioritize strength training this offseason. “I’m skinny as hell,” Buzelis said. “I definitely have to add strength. Your body’s a temple, so you really want to take care of it.”
