The Milwaukee Bucks have released guard Cam Thomas and elevated forward Pete Nance to a multiyear standard contract, the team announced Monday.
ESPN’s Shams Charania first reported the move, which ends Thomas’s brief tenure in Milwaukee just weeks after he arrived on a rest-of-season minimum agreement following the trade deadline.
General manager Jon Horst had pitched Thomas on being part of the club’s long-term core, and head coach Doc Rivers likened the 22-year-old scorer to former Sixth Man of the Year winners Jamal Crawford and Lou Williams. Despite the endorsement, Thomas never found a consistent role.
With the Bucks he averaged 10.6 points on 43.1% shooting (27.5% from three) in 16.6 minutes across 18 games, a decline from the 24.3 minutes per game he logged earlier this season with the Brooklyn Nets. He also recorded two DNP-CDs last week, signaling reduced opportunity.
Thomas, who had previously asked Brooklyn for his release, is expected to draw interest as he enters free agency. Nance, 24, now occupies the roster spot on a full NBA contract after spending the season on a two-way deal.
