Giannis Antetokounmpo attempted to re-enter Sunday’s 134-123 victory over the Indiana Pacers after appearing to hyperextend his left knee, but Milwaukee’s medical staff and coaches ruled out a return, the forward told reporters.
“I wanted to get back in the game,” Antetokounmpo said, according to The Athletic. “They looked at me and said, ‘No, it’s not worth it.’”
The injury occurred late in the third quarter when the two-time MVP landed awkwardly following a spin move and dunk. He stayed on the floor briefly before heading to the locker room and did not come back.
Head coach Doc Rivers said the exact diagnosis has not been determined. “My guess is he hyperextended his knee, but I’m guessing,” Rivers noted.
Antetokounmpo, who has missed time with various ailments this season, plans to monitor the knee before undergoing imaging. “I’m just going to go back home, sleep, see how I feel tomorrow,” he said. “If I have discomfort, we’ll go from there.”
The 29-year-old has appeared in 36 of Milwaukee’s 67 games. Entering Sunday’s contest he was averaging 27.5 points, 9.7 rebounds and 5.4 assists.
