Dallas Mavericks guard Brandon Williams publicly apologized Wednesday for his weekend arrest on a misdemeanor marijuana possession charge at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport.

“I want to apologize for being a distraction,” Williams told reporters before Wednesday’s game. “I take full accountability and responsibility.” He added that he could not discuss details because the matter remains open.

According to a Dallas Morning News report, Transportation Security Administration personnel alerted airport police Saturday after finding a black container holding roughly 1.5 ounces of marijuana inside Williams’ suitcase. Williams acknowledged the bag was his but said it had been packed by his manager and that he did not know the contents, the newspaper said. The charge filed—possession of marijuana under two ounces—is a Class B misdemeanor in Texas.

The Mavericks declined to comment on the incident.

Williams, who had missed the club’s previous two games for what were listed as personal reasons, was away attending a memorial service for a close friend and former high-school teammate who died of leukemia in late September, head coach Jason Kidd told reporters.

Now in his third season with Dallas, the 23-year-old guard averaged 8.3 points and 2.3 assists in 33 appearances last year after stepping in for the injured Kyrie Irving and earned a conversion from a two-way deal to a standard contract in April. His current $2.3 million contract carried only a $200,000 guarantee at the start of the season and becomes fully guaranteed on Jan. 10; it is presently guaranteed for $850,000. Williams has logged two brief appearances this year and has yet to score.
