MINNEAPOLIS — Guard Bones Hyland has injected offense and optimism into an injury-depleted Minnesota Timberwolves roster, averaging 20 points over his past four outings and pouring in 23 during Sunday’s 109-103 victory in Boston—the club’s first road win over the Celtics since 2005.

Pressed into a larger role while star guard Anthony Edwards and several teammates recover, Hyland has paired his scoring surge with spirited celebrations and in-game banter. “It feels good to be here,” he told NBC after Sunday’s game. “Everyone loves each other. We go out shopping together. We eat together. It’s a fantastic team…We’re creating the vibes for the playoffs.”

Head coach Chris Finch’s group, coming off consecutive trips to the Western Conference finals, has fought to avoid the play-in round. Hyland—whom teammates have dubbed their unofficial “Chief Vibes Officer”—said no one can replace Edwards. “He’s the head of our team,” Hyland noted. “But we’ve got a lot of guys that can step up. That’s what we did tonight.”

Reid Returns; Lengthy Film Session Pays Off

Center Naz Reid, sidelined two games with a sprained right ankle, contributed 11 points and seven rebounds off the bench Sunday. Guard Ayo Dosunmu said Finch held an extensive pre-game film review after Friday’s home loss to Portland. “The guys understood the magnitude of this game,” Dosunmu explained. “We took the constructive criticism and responded.”

Nuggets Lean on Small-Ball Lineup with Watson Back

Denver forward Peyton Watson returned Sunday and logged 14 points, six rebounds and three assists in 20 minutes. The Nuggets employed a small-ball look reminiscent of their 2023 title run. “One thing he brings is an extra rim protector, which is really important—and he does it time and time again,” teammate Cameron Johnson said.

Jazz Likely Lose Markkanen for Season; George Still Weighs Return

Utah forward Lauri Markkanen, out more than three weeks with a right hip impingement, will be re-evaluated in two weeks and appears unlikely to play again this season. Rookie guard Keyonte George, nursing a hamstring strain since March 11, also faces a two-week checkpoint. If cleared promptly and active for the remainder of the schedule, George could still meet eligibility requirements for Most Improved Player consideration.
