TORONTO — Raptors forward RJ Barrett said he is comfortable with his name surfacing in offseason trade discussions, noting that contract logistics often drive speculation.
Barrett, who has two seasons and $57 million remaining on his deal, acknowledged to TSN’s Josh Lewenberg that his salary made him a logical component in any potential blockbuster. “Obviously, this is the place I want to be,” Barrett said. “I would love to finish my career here. … I don’t take [the rumors] personally. All I can do is play my game and try to help the team win.”
Rockets
Houston head coach Ime Udoka told reporters Dorian Finney-Smith is “probably” out for opening night while he finishes rehabilitation from June ankle surgery, according to the Houston Chronicle. The forward has not been cleared for contact but is participating in shooting drills and treatment sessions.
Udoka added that the team is monitoring the workloads of center Steven Adams and forward Tari Eason, both coming off surgical procedures. The Rockets’ first back-to-back set is in early December, and the club has not decided whether either player will appear in both games.
With Finney-Smith sidelined, Udoka said Eason could contend for a starting spot. He also mentioned experimenting with an oversized lineup featuring Kevin Durant, Amen Thompson, Jabari Smith Jr., Alperen Şengün and Adams, calling it “probably one of the biggest in the history of the league,” The Athletic reported.
Spurs
After ranking near the bottom of the NBA in rebounding and defensive efficiency when Victor Wembanyama rested last season, San Antonio added veterans Luke Kornet and Kelly Olynyk to reinforce the paint, general manager Brian Wright told the San Antonio Express-News.
“We wanted to be able to have that roster versatility to play a bunch of different ways and also protect the paint when Vic’s not on the floor,” Wright said. “I think those guys allow us to do that.”
The Spurs open training camp later this month with an emphasis on improving interior defense and second-chance opportunities.
