The Toronto Raptors ended a stretch of losses to winning teams by defeating the Phoenix Suns on Friday night, highlighted by a critical defensive play from Scottie Barnes in the closing minute.
Barnes Plays Through Illness, Delivers Key Stop
Barnes, listed as questionable earlier in the day because of illness, logged 14 points, six rebounds and four assists. With 43 seconds remaining, the forward chased down Jalen Green and swatted away a potential dunk from behind. The block ignited a fast-break that RJ Barrett finished with a slam, effectively sealing the contest.
“Got out there. Was a little tired and a little winded,” Barnes said afterward, according to Sportsnet. “Fight through and make it to live another day.”
The victory marked Toronto’s first triumph over a team above .500 since Jan. 25.
Ingram Paces Suns With Efficient 36
Phoenix forward Brandon Ingram posted a game-high 36 points on 13-for-20 shooting and added seven rebounds. “I think it was an urgency to compete and most of all stay together,” Ingram noted. “Tonight we just stayed connected.”
Team Heeds Coach’s Challenge
Head coach Darko Rajaković recently criticized his roster for failing to react when Dejounte Murray taunted Jamal Shead during a loss earlier in the week. “I thought we did not handle the situation the way we want,” Rajaković said before tip-off.
The Raptors responded differently Friday. Multiple players confronted Grayson Allen immediately after his flagrant foul on Barrett, reflecting the collective mindset Rajaković had demanded.
Shead Keeps It Light
Shead, who finished with six points and eight assists off the bench, downplayed the earlier incident with Murray. “I was just like, ‘Oh snap, he’s over me,’” he recalled.
The Raptors will look to build on the momentum when they continue their homestand next week.
