NEW YORK — Rookie center Danny Wolf handed out five assists in just 15 minutes during the Brooklyn Nets’ first preseason game, underscoring the playmaking that made him the 27th overall pick in June.

“When the coaches trust me with the ball in my hands, it’s up to me to make a play,” Wolf said after the game. The former University of Michigan standout averaged 4.2 assists last season, the second-highest single-season figure ever recorded by a college player listed at 7-feet or taller.

Veteran guard Eric Gordon, who teamed with first-round selection VJ Edgecombe on the Bahamas national team, said he is ready to serve as a mentor during his 18th NBA season. “At my age, in my phase of my career, you have to mentor,” Gordon told the Philadelphia Inquirer, adding that he also expects to keep spacing the floor and “knock down shots” for the 76ers.

Nets, Suns bring NBA back to China

Brooklyn will meet the Phoenix Suns in preseason contests Friday and Sunday in China, marking the league’s first games there since 2019. The Nets departed Monday for the 17-hour flight. “For the first few days you’re on the opposite schedule,” forward Michael Porter Jr. said. “But I’m excited to bring the NBA to China … it’ll be fun to get our first taste against another NBA team.”
