Rookie forward Grant Nelson has rejoined the Long Island Nets but will not suit up again this season because of patellar tendinitis in his right knee, according to The New York Post. The 24-year-old’s setback helps explain why Brooklyn chose not to offer him a second 10-day contract after a productive first stint with the parent club.
Nets Lose DayRon Sharpe for Season
Brooklyn also confirmed that center DayRon Sharpe suffered a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his left thumb and will undergo season-ending surgery. Head coach Jordi Fernandez praised the fifth-year big man’s development before the injury, calling his improvement “hard work” that is “fixable” once the procedure is complete. Sharpe’s future in Brooklyn is uncertain; the Nets hold a $6.25 million team option for next season.
Short-Handed Sixers Slip in Standings
The 76ers were without Joel Embiid, Paul George, Tyrese Maxey, Kelly Oubre Jr., Andre Drummond and Adem Bona—a combined $160 million in salary—during Thursday’s loss to the conference-leading Pistons in Detroit. With six straight defeats, Philadelphia has fallen from the No. 6 to the No. 9 seed in one week as Orlando, Miami and Atlanta surged ahead.
Rookie guard VJ Edgecombe has shown flashes of star potential and may need to carry a heavier offensive load to keep the club in the playoff mix. “If my team needs me to take more shots, I’m ready for that,” Edgecombe told The Athletic.
Embiid Update
Embiid (oblique strain) has missed seven consecutive games and will be reevaluated Friday. The former MVP has already been ruled out of Saturday’s matchup with Brooklyn.
