The Brooklyn Nets have ruled first-year guard Egor Demin out for the remainder of the season because of a lingering left foot injury, head coach Jordi Fernández said. The decision, made with about 20 games left on the schedule, is intended to spare the 20-year-old from surgery and give him a full offseason to recover.

“He wants to play and develop, but the discomfort kept him from performing at the necessary level,” Fernández explained. “The positive news is that the treatment is nonsurgical.”

Orthopedist Dr. Andrew Brief of Ridgewood Orthopedic Group, who is not involved in Demin’s care, told the New York Post the timing made sense. “He’s having symptoms and recurrences, and the team isn’t in a playoff race, so shutting him down is appropriate,” Brief said.

Sixers Enter Detroit Game Depleted

The Philadelphia 76ers will face the Pistons on Friday without Joel Embiid (knee), Tyrese Maxey (hip) and Kelly Oubre Jr. (ribs). Rookies Adem Bona (back) and Johni Broome (knee) have also been ruled out, while backup center Andre Drummond (back) is listed as questionable. The absences leave Philadelphia with limited frontcourt depth for the road matchup.

Raptors Assess Ingram’s Fit

Brandon Ingram’s recent play has come under scrutiny in Toronto. Without injured forward Scottie Barnes beside him, Ingram’s challenges as a primary option have surfaced, The Athletic reported. He remains a willing passer but has struggled with quick decisions and is mired in a shooting slump.

Shead Looks to Break Shooting Funk

Rookie guard Jamal Shead showed signs of life Wednesday against New Orleans, producing nine points, three assists and no turnovers in 20 minutes. Entering the night, Shead had connected on just 20 percent of his attempts in March and is shooting 36.8 percent overall. Coaches believe improved scoring efficiency is critical to his NBA viability.
