The Minnesota Timberwolves have ruled Anthony Edwards out for Thursday night’s road game against the Detroit Pistons, the club announced. The fourth-year guard is dealing with right knee patellofemoral pain syndrome and an illness.

Missing the contest drops Edwards below the league’s 65-game minimum required to qualify for major postseason awards. The 24-year-old had appeared in 59 games this season. Even if he plays in all six of Minnesota’s remaining regular-season contests after Thursday, one earlier three-minute appearance will not count toward the threshold, leaving him with 64 qualifying games.

Edwards had been a strong candidate for a third consecutive All-NBA selection after averaging career highs of 29.3 points, 5.1 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.4 steals while shooting .493 from the field, .404 from three-point range and .797 at the foul line across 35.3 minutes per game.

The Timberwolves enter Thursday at 46-29, holding the No. 6 seed in the Western Conference. They sit 4.5 games ahead of seventh-place Phoenix, while trailing Denver by 1.5 games for the fourth seed and Houston by half a game for fifth.

Trade-deadline acquisition Ayo Dosunmu, who recorded 18 points, 15 rebounds and 12 assists in Monday’s victory at Dallas, is expected to move into the starting lineup with Edwards sidelined.
