The NBA has levied a $25,000 fine against Minnesota Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards for forcefully tossing the game ball into the spectator stands, the league announced Thursday on social media.
According to the NBA, the incident happened at halftime of Minnesota’s 109-106 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers on Tuesday night at Moda Center.
Edwards, selected first overall in the 2020 draft, received multiple fines during the 2024-25 season. Aside from technical fouls, Thursday’s punishment is believed to be his first monetary penalty of 2025-26.
The 22-year-old is in the second season of a five-year rookie-scale maximum extension that escalated from 25% to 30% of the 2024-25 salary cap after he earned All-NBA Second Team honors in 2023-24. The contract guarantees $202.4 million over the next four seasons, making the $25,000 fine financially insignificant for the four-time All-Star.
Edwards is producing career-best numbers this year, averaging 29.6 points, 5.3 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.4 steals while shooting 49.3% from the field, 40.0% from three and 78.9% at the line across 49 games (35.6 minutes per contest). Minnesota sits fifth in the Western Conference at 36-23.
