Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo and his representative, Alex Saratsis, have started formal conversations with team executives to map out the two-time MVP’s long-term plans, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.

Charania reports that the talks are aimed at deciding whether Antetokounmpo’s best opportunity to compete for championships remains in Milwaukee or lies elsewhere. A decision is expected within the next several weeks.

Speculation around the 30-year-old’s future intensified during the offseason, when Milwaukee suffered a first-round playoff exit for the third straight year and lost guard Damian Lillard to an Achilles tear. While Antetokounmpo has repeatedly voiced affection for the city and franchise, he has emphasized that sustained title contention is his top priority.

Over the summer, Antetokounmpo raised doubts about the Bucks’ championship ceiling and explored potential alternatives. He reportedly expressed interest in the New York Knicks if a departure became necessary, prompting brief trade discussions between the two clubs. Talks stalled when Milwaukee found New York’s offers unappealing.

Instead of moving its franchise cornerstone, Milwaukee cleared cap space by waiving and stretching Lillard’s maximum-salary contract, then signed free-agent center Myles Turner in an effort to strengthen the roster.

Antetokounmpo recommitted to the Bucks before training camp, planning to evaluate the team’s first 25 or so games before making any decisions. The Bucks have stumbled out of the gate, dropping eight of their last nine contests to fall to 9-13 and outside the Eastern Conference’s top 10.

Further developments are expected as discussions continue.
