Al Horford says chase for high-level competition led him to Warriors

Al Horford formally opened his Golden State chapter on Monday, telling reporters that the Warriors’ championship pedigree made them the obvious destination once he entered free agency.
“It’s a great opportunity to compete and to win at a high level,” the 39-year-old center said during his introductory press conference, according to Tim Bontemps of ESPN. “When I think about the Warriors, I think about Steph, Draymond, Steve Kerr, and seeing Jimmy Butler here. If there was a place, this was the one. I jumped at it.”
Horford acknowledged that he never intended to retire this summer, but he was surprised his free-agency process stretched into October. He reportedly agreed to join Golden State early in the offseason, yet the contract was not finalized until the club resolved matters with restricted free agent Jonathan Kuminga.
“It was definitely a very odd offseason—just kind of waiting and waiting,” Horford recalled. “My whole focus was on my training, preparing myself, and making sure I was in the best place for when the season started.”
With his deal now official, the five-time All-Star is expected to bolster a frontcourt that already features Draymond Green as the Warriors pursue another deep playoff run.
