Injury updates for two prominent starters and a breakout performance in Washington dominated Thursday’s NBA news cycle.
Heat Rule Out Adebayo for Hornets Matchup
The Miami Heat announced that center Bam Adebayo will sit out Thursday night’s game against the Charlotte Hornets with a sprained left big toe. According to the Miami Herald, the All-Star is listed as day-to-day after colliding with Brooklyn’s Cameron Johnson on Wednesday in Denver. Adebayo briefly remained on the floor before heading to the locker room and did not return.
With Adebayo unavailable, rookie Kelel Ware is expected to receive additional minutes. Forward Keshad Johnson handled small-ball center duties against Denver, and two-way big man Vlad Goldin has been recalled to bolster the frontcourt rotation.
Pelicans Lose Poole to Quad Strain
The New Orleans Pelicans said guard Jordan Poole has a mild strain in his left quadriceps and will be reevaluated in seven to ten days. Poole missed Wednesday’s win in Dallas after knee soreness evolved into the quad diagnosis; he had logged 27 minutes the previous night in Charlotte.
Through seven games, Poole is averaging 17.3 points and 3.4 assists, though he has shot just 5-for-25 over his last two outings. Saddiq Bey started in his place Wednesday and could keep that role until Poole returns, while Jose Alvarado and Jordan Hawkins also absorbed extra minutes.
New Orleans carries a two-game winning streak after opening the season 0-6. Forward Zion Williamson remains out with a Grade 1 strain of his left hamstring.
George Emerging as Wizards’ Playmaking Option
Kyshawn George has entered the early conversation for the NBA’s Most Improved Player award, thanks in part to expanded ball-handling duties with the Washington Wizards. NBC Sports’ Eric Samulski reported that the Wizards have entrusted the 22-year-old with more pick-and-roll opportunities.
“Growing up, I’ve always been a point guard,” George said. “They’ve given me the opportunity to run the pick and roll more, and I’m just taking advantage of it.”
The Wizards intend to continue evaluating George in that role as the season progresses.
