WASHINGTON — Representatives from the NBA league office met with Congressional staffers on Wednesday to discuss the league’s ongoing illegal gambling investigation, according to The Athletic.

The closed-door session, which lasted less than an hour, did not include Commissioner Adam Silver or Deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum. Attorneys for both the NBA and the House Energy & Commerce Committee, along with a consultant hired by the league, handled the briefing.

Committee staff requested the meeting after federal prosecutors last month charged Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups, Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier, and former NBA player Damon Jones in separate betting-related cases.

Lawmakers’ aides asked how the league monitors non-public information, manages its partnerships with gambling companies, and allowed the alleged misconduct to occur. The NBA has not announced any new integrity protocols since the charges became public.

Billups is accused of taking part in a rigged poker operation linked to multiple New York crime families dating back to 2019. Rozier allegedly manipulated his on-court performance to influence proposition bets during the 2023 season. Details of the case against Jones have not been publicly disclosed.

No timetable has been given for additional meetings or for the league’s next steps.
