NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said this week that franchises based outside North America could one day compete in official league events, including the new in-season NBA Cup and possibly even the playoffs.
Speaking at the Bloomberg Philanthropies Global Forum, Silver told attendees he could “envision” teams from Europe or Africa entering league competitions as travel technology continues to improve. “I think it’s very doable in our league,” he said, according to The Athletic’s Mike Vorkunov.
Silver cited advances in aviation as a key factor that could make the idea workable. He suggested that four European clubs, for example, could fly to New York for a series of games, then return overseas to host multiple matchups before heading back to the United States, creating a manageable schedule for all sides.
The commissioner did not offer a specific timeline for when international teams might be integrated but emphasized that logistical challenges are becoming less daunting.
