EL SEGUNDO, Calif., Oct. 7, 2025 — When LeBron James teased “the decision of all decisions” on social media Monday night, the Los Angeles Lakers treated it as nothing more than a marketing stunt.
“We all knew it was an ad, right?” head coach JJ Redick told reporters after Tuesday’s practice, before joking with the media, “You guys are idiots.”
James’ post on X hinted at a major announcement scheduled for Tuesday. Instead, the four-time MVP appeared in a commercial for Hennessy cognac, wearing a red-and-white checkered shirt reminiscent of his 2010 ESPN special in which he revealed his move from Cleveland to Miami. In the new spot, James says he will “take his talents to Hennessy VSOP.”

Redick, guard Austin Reaves and forward Rui Hachimura each said their phones lit up after the post went live.
“I think most people that text me are also aware that it’s probably an ad,” Redick explained. “So it wasn’t … nobody was freaking out.”
Hachimura reached out to James directly. The response came back as a single emoji, though Hachimura declined to identify which one. “He loves to do that type of stuff,” the forward said. “Surprises, right?”
Reaves fielded several calls from friends wondering if James was about to retire. “People [were] thinking that he was retiring,” Reaves said. “I’m glad he’s not. That’s all I can say.” Reaves added that he does not drink alcohol, but joked, “If I start, I guess it’ll be that.”
The Lakers open training camp this week with James, 40, entering his 22nd NBA season.
