Winter storm prompts NBA and college programs to shift schedules

A powerful winter system forecast to deliver snow, ice and sub-freezing temperatures from New Mexico to New England has forced a flurry of schedule changes across professional and collegiate sports.
NBA
The Washington Wizards–Charlotte Hornets matchup on Saturday in Charlotte will now tip off at noon instead of its original afternoon start.
Men’s college basketball
ACC officials moved up three Saturday games: Wake Forest at Duke, North Carolina at Virginia, and Virginia Tech at Louisville.
Xavier advanced its Saturday home game against St. John’s by one hour.
Appalachian State shifted its home contest with Louisiana-Lafayette to Thursday morning, while Marshall rescheduled Thursday’s meeting with Louisiana-Monroe for a noon start. Middle Tennessee State moved its Conference USA game against Jacksonville State to Friday evening.
The American Athletic Conference pushed several weekend games to Friday, and North Carolina Central postponed two men’s and two women’s games set for Thursday through Monday in Durham, North Carolina.
Additional Saturday adjustments include Towson at North Carolina A&T and Texas State at James Madison.
Women’s college basketball
No. 1 UConn’s visit to Seton Hall was moved from Sunday to Saturday. No. 14 Baylor will now host Houston on Tuesday instead of Sunday. Cincinnati’s game against Arizona State was shifted to noon Saturday.
The Sun Belt Conference rearranged multiple tipoff times between Thursday and Saturday, and the American adjusted several women’s contests to Friday.
Other Saturday games moved up include No. 20 Princeton at Brown and North Florida at Eastern Kentucky.
Rice altered both of its home schedules: the men will face Tulsa on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. instead of Sunday, and the women will meet Tulane at 1 p.m. Saturday, one hour earlier than planned. George Mason’s home game against Richmond was moved up three hours to 11 a.m. Sunday and will be played without spectators.
Other college events
Tennessee’s swim meet at Georgia and USC Upstate’s women’s basketball game at Longwood were advanced to Friday.
Major League Baseball
The Texas Rangers canceled Saturday’s annual Fan Fest at Globe Life Field, citing the threat of frozen precipitation and safety concerns for participants and staff.
