San Antonio Spurs forward-center Victor Wembanyama was ruled out for the entire second half of Monday night’s game against the Philadelphia 76ers after sustaining a left rib contusion.
The injury occurred with 10:47 remaining in the second quarter at Frost Bank Center when Wembanyama collided near midcourt with 76ers forward Paul George while receiving an outlet pass. He exited to the locker room moments later, returned to the bench at the 6:49 mark, but asked out again with 44.3 seconds left before halftime and did not rejoin the team after intermission.
Wembanyama logged 15 minutes and 40 seconds, registering 17 points, five rebounds and three blocks. Because NBA rules allow two sub-20-minute appearances of at least 15 minutes to count toward postseason award eligibility, the playing time will count for honors such as Most Valuable Player and Defensive Player of the Year. The 22-year-old must still appear for at least 20 minutes in one of San Antonio’s final three contests to remain eligible.
Entering Monday, the third-year French star led the Spurs with averages of 24.9 points, 11.6 rebounds and 3.1 blocks. He had produced three consecutive performances of at least 30 points, 15 rebounds and three blocks, matching the second-longest streak since blocks became an official statistic in 1973-74; only Shaquille O’Neal’s four-game run in 1999 is longer.
