Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry will not take part in Sunday’s NBA All-Star Game in Los Angeles because of ongoing pain in his right knee, head coach Steve Kerr announced Monday.
Kerr delivered the update before the Warriors faced the Memphis Grizzlies in San Francisco, noting that Curry continues to deal with patellofemoral pain syndrome—commonly called runner’s knee. The condition has already sidelined the two-time MVP for four consecutive games.
Curry is also scheduled to sit out Wednesday’s contest against the San Antonio Spurs. The organization hopes he can return when the regular season resumes Feb. 19, when Golden State hosts the Boston Celtics.
“It’s a matter of learning as I go what works rehab-wise, because it’s still painful,” Curry told ESPN. “You have to try to get rid of all the inflammation and pain. It’s something we still have to monitor and injury-manage, but it’s something where, if I come back too early, it could flare up.”
The knee trouble resurfaced two weeks ago during an individual workout. Curry missed one game in Minnesota, attempted to play through discomfort in the next two outings, and then left a home loss to the Detroit Pistons in the third quarter after limping to the locker room.
Curry joins Oklahoma City Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander on the list of selected All-Stars who will be absent from this year’s showcase. The NBA has not yet announced a replacement for Curry on Team USA’s roster.
