Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry left Friday night’s home game against the Detroit Pistons after aggravating soreness in his right knee, the club announced during the second half.

The issue surfaced with 4:28 remaining in the third quarter when Curry converted a contorted layup while drawing a foul. Moments later he was seen grimacing and favoring his right leg. After a brief stop at the bench and a short consultation with team medical staff, the 37-year-old limped to the locker room and did not return.

According to the Warriors, the discomfort is related to patellofemoral inflammation, the same problem that appeared on the team’s injury report six days earlier. Curry experienced swelling following an individual workout in Minneapolis and described the sensation as “something I hadn’t felt before.”

The four-time NBA champion was listed as questionable for last Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Timberwolves but played through the pain in a road win. Golden State held him out of Monday’s rematch with Minnesota, then cleared him for Wednesday’s contest in Utah and Friday’s meeting with Detroit.

Curry had scored 23 points in 25 minutes before departing. The Warriors, who improved to 20-27 with the 113-101 victory, do not play again until Tuesday when they host the Philadelphia 76ers.
