MIAMI — The Golden State Warriors have ruled Stephen Curry out of Wednesday night’s matchup against the Miami Heat because of soreness in his right ankle, the club confirmed about six hours before tip-off.
Curry first tweaked the ankle last Friday during a 49-point outburst in San Antonio and aggravated it again in the opening half of Tuesday’s loss in Orlando. The two-time MVP said after that game he would gauge the injury’s response to a flight and a night’s rest. Golden State is optimistic he can return Friday when the Warriors host the Portland Trail Blazers in San Francisco.
Several other key players are also on the Warriors’ injury report. Jimmy Butler is listed as questionable with the lower-back soreness that caused him to miss a game in Sacramento earlier this season. Wednesday marks Butler’s second visit to Miami since the Heat traded him to Golden State last February.
Draymond Green and reserve guard Buddy Hield are both questionable because of an illness, while veteran center Al Horford will sit for rest on the second night of a back-to-back. Fifth-year forward Jonathan Kuminga remains out with knee tendinitis.
Wednesday’s contest caps a demanding early-season stretch for Golden State. By the final buzzer, the Warriors will have played a league-high 17 games in the season’s first 29 days, spanning 12 cities and an NBA-leading five back-to-backs. Their next five games will be at Chase Center.
