Los Angeles Lakers guard Luka Doncic surprised both fans and teammates with a powerful two-handed dunk during the third quarter of Monday night’s 121-111 road victory over the Charlotte Hornets.
After bringing the ball up from the backcourt, Doncic split two defenders, rose over forward Moussa Diabate and finished with a rim-shaking slam, punctuating the play with a yell as he released the rim.
The following day, SportsCenter posted a photo of the dunk on Instagram, prompting lighthearted jabs from several Lakers. Forward Jake LaRavia wrote, “U can dunk?” while forward Jarred Vanderbilt labeled the picture “AI.” Guard Austin Reaves chimed in, joking that the slam was Doncic’s “first dunk of the year.”
According to Basketball Reference, Monday’s play was the Slovenian star’s third dunk over the past two seasons—two this year with Los Angeles and one last season with the Dallas Mavericks before he was traded.
Doncic finished the game with 38 points on 14-for-28 shooting, plus six rebounds and seven assists. Through the first weeks of the season he is averaging 37.1 points, 9.4 rebounds and 9.1 assists.
