Indiana Pacers head coach Rick Carlisle said Sunday that point guard Tyrese Haliburton has been diagnosed with shingles and is expected to remain away from the team for several weeks.
Carlisle told reporters that Haliburton developed “odd symptoms” while traveling to meet the Pacers in Washington, D.C. last week and subsequently returned to Indianapolis for medical evaluation. “It’s a very painful thing,” Carlisle said, adding that doctors anticipate a full recovery.
Haliburton, 26, has not played this season after tearing his Achilles tendon in Game 7 of last year’s NBA Finals. Despite the injury, he had been sitting on the bench during games to support teammates before the shingles diagnosis.
Shingles is a viral infection marked by a painful skin rash and is caused by the same virus that leads to chickenpox.
Without their All-Star guard, the Pacers have fallen to a 15-42 record, the worst mark in the Eastern Conference.
