Tom Izzo Blasts NCAA for Allowing NBA Draft Pick James Nnaji to Suit Up for Baylor

Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo sharply criticized the NCAA on Saturday, calling it “a shame” that James Nnaji—already selected in an NBA Draft—is eligible to play this season for Baylor University.
Speaking with reporters on Dec. 27, 2025, Izzo said the governing body is sending mixed messages about amateurism by clearing an athlete who holds NBA draft status. “The NCAA keeps talking about what’s fair,” Izzo stated. “Allowing a drafted player on a college roster is anything but fair.”
Nnaji, a 6-foot-10 center and former NBA second-round pick, transferred to Baylor after his draft rights were secured by a professional team. Although he has not signed an NBA contract, Izzo argued that his draft position alone should preclude him from college competition.
Izzo’s comments came as Michigan State prepares to face Baylor later in the non-conference schedule. The veteran coach, who has led the Spartans since 1995, warned that the precedent could blur the line between collegiate and professional basketball. “We’re either running a college game or we’re not,” he said. “This isn’t it.”
The NCAA has not publicly responded to Izzo’s remarks. Baylor and Nnaji have also declined comment on the controversy.
