Minnesota Timberwolves forward Jaden McDaniels has been ruled week-to-week after an MRI revealed patella tendinopathy and a bone bruise in his left knee, the team announced Monday.
McDaniels sustained the injury late in Wednesday’s overtime win against the Houston Rockets and was unavailable for Saturday’s loss to the Detroit Pistons. The sixth-year pro has appeared in at least 70 games in five of his six NBA seasons and is averaging 14.8 points, 1.1 steals and 1.0 blocks while anchoring Minnesota’s perimeter defense this year.
The timing is critical for the Timberwolves, who have eight games remaining in a tight Western Conference race. Minnesota heads into Monday night’s road game against the Dallas Mavericks tied with Houston for the No. 5 seed and holding a five-game cushion in the loss column over the seventh-place Phoenix Suns.
The club may soon get a boost from Anthony Edwards. The All-Star guard, sidelined the past six games with a right knee injury, was upgraded to questionable for Monday. Edwards must play Monday and appear in every remaining regular-season contest to retain eligibility for end-of-season awards such as All-NBA.
The first round of the NBA playoffs begins April 18.
