The Minnesota Timberwolves announced Tuesday that guard Anthony Edwards will miss the night’s matchup with the Phoenix Suns because of soreness in his right knee.

An MRI conducted by Dr. Craig Bennett at Mayo Clinic Sports Medicine showed inflammation in the joint, and the team said Edwards will be re-evaluated in one to two weeks. Further medical updates will be released when available, according to the club.

The timing is significant for Minnesota, which holds sixth place in the Western Conference. Phoenix trails by two games and already owns the tiebreaker after winning the first two meetings of the season. Tuesday’s contest at Target Center opens a critical two-game homestand for the Timberwolves.

Minnesota has dropped four of its past five outings, including Sunday’s 107-99 loss in Oklahoma City in which it committed 25 turnovers—its second-highest total of the season. Edwards finished that game with 19 points on 6-for-17 shooting and attempted only one field goal in the fourth quarter while appearing to favor the sore knee.

Now in his fourth NBA season, the 24-year-old leads the Timberwolves with averages of 29.5 points, 5.1 rebounds and 3.7 assists, shooting 49.2% from the field and 40.2% from three-point range.

Durability has been a hallmark of Edwards’ career—he missed just nine games over his first three seasons—but he has already sat out 10 this year. With 57 games logged, he can be absent for no more than six of Minnesota’s remaining 14 contests to remain eligible for end-of-season awards.

Tuesday’s game against the Suns precedes a back-to-back that continues Wednesday, when the Timberwolves host the Utah Jazz, also at Target Center.
