Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry received the first flagrant foul of his 16-season NBA career during his 1,193rd league appearance, marking a rare disciplinary moment for the two-time Most Valuable Player.
The infraction, ruled a Flagrant 1 after video review, came Tuesday night and stunned both teammates and fans who have long viewed Curry as one of the NBA’s most mild-mannered stars. Before the call, the 36-year-old sharpshooter had never been assessed a flagrant in either regular-season or postseason play.
Curry’s spotless flagrant record stretched across more than a decade of games, including four championships, nine All-Star selections and two scoring titles. According to league statistics, no other active player with a comparable number of appearances had avoided a flagrant foul for as long.
The Warriors did not immediately comment on the play, and Curry declined to discuss the incident in detail afterward, saying only that he “respected the officials’ decision.”
Under NBA rules, a Flagrant 1 is defined as “unnecessary contact committed by a player against an opponent.” The designation carries an automatic fine and is subject to league review for possible additional penalties.
The call did little to slow Curry’s production; he finished the night with a team-high point total. Still, the whistle ended one of the sport’s most unusual personal streaks and added a surprising footnote to a Hall of Fame résumé built on disciplined play and precision shooting.
