LOS ANGELES — The San Antonio Spurs have removed Victor Wembanyama from Thursday night’s lineup against the Los Angeles Clippers, citing right-ankle injury management, the team announced.
The meeting at Crypto.com Arena comes less than 24 hours after San Antonio’s 126-117 victory over the Golden State Warriors in San Francisco. Wembanyama, 22, logged 41 points and 18 rebounds in just 29 minutes during that win.
Earlier Thursday, the 7-foot-4 French star collected his third straight Western Conference Defensive Player of the Month award. In 15 March contests, he amassed 180 rebounds, an NBA-leading 56 blocks and 20 steals, averaging 3.73 blocks and 1.33 steals per game. Ten of those outings included at least four blocks, and six featured two or more steals.
For the season, Wembanyama is averaging 24.7 points, 11.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 3.1 blocks and 1.1 steals over 29.2 minutes. His blocks per game top the league, while his rebounding average ranks fifth.
Considered the frontrunner for NBA Defensive Player of the Year and part of the crowded MVP conversation, Wembanyama must appear in at least four of San Antonio’s final five games after Thursday to reach the 65-game requirement for postseason awards eligibility.
