MIAMI — Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra says he has no regrets about the way Tuesday’s 150-129 win over the Washington Wizards unfolded, a game in which center Bam Adebayo poured in 83 points, the second-highest total in NBA history.
“I’m not apologizing to anyone,” Spoelstra told reporters Thursday, two days after the record-setting performance at Kaseya Center.
The numbers behind the outburst
Adebayo finished 17 points shy of Wilt Chamberlain’s 100-point landmark and surpassed Kobe Bryant’s 81-point effort from 2006. He went 36-for-43 at the free-throw line, setting NBA single-game records for both makes and attempts, and shot 43 times from the field.
The scoring binge developed rapidly: 31 points in the opening quarter, 43 by halftime, 62 after three periods, 70 with 9:05 remaining and 77 with 3:26 left. Miami began intentionally fouling with 1:40 on the clock to regain possession and keep feeding Adebayo, while Washington defenders at times sent three or four players at him.
Reaction around the league
Spoelstra’s end-game strategy drew mixed reviews. Denver Nuggets assistant coach David Adelman and LA Clippers head coach Tyronn Lue both indicated they had no issue with the Heat’s approach. Adelman noted that once Adebayo hit 70, “all bets are off” and called the spectacle “really cool.”
Wizards interim coach Brian Keefe, whose club allowed the barrage, offered little reflection Thursday in Orlando, saying his team was “focused on today.”
Context and motivation
Before tipoff Tuesday, Spoelstra challenged Adebayo to set the tone for a depleted roster missing Norman Powell, Tyler Herro, Andrew Wiggins and Kel’el Ware. Miami had already dropped a game earlier this season to a struggling opponent, and Spoelstra wanted his captain “locked in.”
Adebayo remained on the floor until the 1:08 mark despite the lopsided score. Spoelstra acknowledged the decision was unusual but said memorable moments are “what our fans want to see.”
Coach–player bond
Spoelstra pointed to an episode last December to illustrate his loyalty to Adebayo. One day after a blowout loss to Sacramento, the center showed up unprompted at Spoelstra’s predawn 5K charity run for Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. “That says enough about him as a human being,” the coach said. “I’ll do anything for him.”
The Heat resume play Friday, while Adebayo’s 83-point masterpiece enters the record books as one of the league’s most extraordinary individual nights.
