The remark followed widespread debate over Adebayo’s scoring outburst, which took place earlier in the week. Some observers questioned whether the Heat should have eased off in the closing minutes, but Spoelstra insisted the team handled the situation correctly.
“We compete for the full 48 minutes,” he told reporters. “That’s what this organization is built on.”
Spoelstra emphasized that Adebayo’s minutes and shot attempts were part of the normal flow of the game and said the locker room remained proud of the victory.
The 83-point night is one of the highest single-game totals in NBA history, though league records are still being verified. Adebayo has not commented extensively since the final buzzer, but teammates celebrated the achievement on social media.
The Heat return to the court Friday as their playoff push continues.
