The Memphis Grizzlies plan to sign center Charles Bassey to a 10-day contract under the NBA’s hardship exception, according to sources familiar with the negotiations.
Memphis qualified for the exception with Ty Jerome, Scotty Pippen Jr., Brandon Clarke and rookie Zach Edey all expected to remain out for an extended period. The temporary roster spot allows the club to add depth while those players recover.
Bassey, who turns 25 on Tuesday, has appeared in four NBA seasons with the Philadelphia 76ers and San Antonio Spurs, spending the last three campaigns in San Antonio. During the preseason with the Atlanta Hawks, the 6-foot-11 center averaged 4.5 points, 9.0 rebounds and 2.5 blocks.
He is expected to join the Grizzlies once the league approves the hardship request.
