The Miami Heat plan to release guard Terry Rozier on Friday, according to sources familiar with the decision. The move will clear a roster spot the club intends to fill before the postseason begins.
Rozier, 32, has not been with the team since his Oct. 23 arrest in connection with a federal probe into illegal sports wagering. The NBA placed him on administrative leave shortly after his arrest. He has pleaded not guilty to conspiracy charges of wire fraud and money laundering.
The veteran guard is earning $26.6 million this season, the final year of his contract. That salary is being held in escrow while the legal case proceeds.
Miami acquired Rozier from the Charlotte Hornets in January 2024. After the investigation became public, the two franchises negotiated a resolution: Charlotte agreed to send Miami a second-round pick in the June 2026 draft, while the Heat will still forward their protected 2027 first-round selection (which becomes unprotected in 2028 if it does not convey) to the Hornets.
NBA commissioner Adam Silver described the matter as an “unprecedented situation” during a news conference at the NBA Cup in Las Vegas last December.
