The Miami Heat plan to release guard Terry Rozier before the regular-season finale, creating an open roster spot for the playoffs, according to league sources.

Rozier, 32, has not been with the team since his Oct. 23 arrest tied to a federal probe into illegal gambling. He has pleaded not guilty to conspiracy counts of wire fraud and money laundering.

Miami acquired Rozier from the Charlotte Hornets in January 2024. After questions emerged about whether the Heat had been informed of ongoing NBA and federal investigations before the trade, Charlotte agreed to send Miami a second-round pick in the June 2026 draft to settle the matter. The Heat still owe the Hornets a protected 2027 first-round pick that becomes unprotected in 2028 if it does not convey.

NBA commissioner Adam Silver labeled the situation “unprecedented” during a December 2025 news conference at the NBA Cup in Las Vegas.

Rozier is earning $26.6 million in the final year of his contract, with the salary currently held in escrow while the legal case proceeds. Because the deal expires this summer, the Heat must waive him by 5 p.m. ET on April 9 so he can clear waivers before the regular season ends on April 12.

The Miami Herald first reported the team’s intention to waive Rozier.
