Los Angeles Clippers forward Derrick Jones Jr. will be out for a minimum of six weeks after spraining the MCL in his right knee, according to sources who spoke with ESPN’s Shams Charania on Monday.
The 28-year-old sustained the injury during Sunday’s 121-118 loss to the Boston Celtics. Midway through the second quarter, Jones dove for a loose ball and collided with Boston’s Jaylen Brown, whose arm struck Jones’ leg. Jones immediately grabbed his knee, writhed on the floor, then was helped to the locker room while barely putting weight on the limb. Brown was called for a foul on the play.
Jones had opened the season in the starting lineup for all 13 games, posting a career-best 10.9 points per contest before the setback.
The Clippers are already dealing with significant absences. Kawhi Leonard missed his seventh consecutive game Monday because of an ankle and foot sprain, and Bradley Beal has been ruled out for the season after fracturing his hip on Nov. 8.
“It’s tough,” guard James Harden said of the mounting injuries. “It’s like one after the next. You just try to keep your head on straight, focus on what you can control and come away with wins. Hopefully guys will start coming back sooner than later.”
Jones will be reevaluated in six weeks to determine his progress and any potential return timetable.
