EL SEGUNDO, Calif., Dec. 27, 2025 — The Los Angeles Lakers gathered Saturday for a closed-door meeting and an unusually long practice two days after a lopsided Christmas Day defeat to the Houston Rockets, aiming to “recalibrate” following a three-game skid.
Head coach JJ Redick, who publicly criticized the club’s effort after Thursday’s 119-95 loss, described the session as a chance for players and coaches to “reconnect” and hear hard truths. “The truth is uncomfortable,” Redick told reporters. “You have to put everything out there.”
Los Angeles sits fourth in the Western Conference but has dropped six of its past 10 contests, with each of its 10 defeats coming by double digits. The downturn coincides with another setback: starting guard Austin Reaves is expected to miss approximately four weeks after an MRI on Friday revealed a strained calf.
Center Deandre Ayton, who was limited to two rebounds in 36 minutes against Houston, said he intends to take on a louder leadership role on defense. “Holding my guys accountable, especially starting with me,” he said, emphasizing the need for consistent second-effort plays.
Forward Rui Hachimura added that the group had “relaxed” after a strong start to the season. “Everybody — players, coaches — we just have to tighten up,” he said.
Redick outlined three priorities from the meeting: defensive clarity, role clarity and offensive organization. Since LeBron James’ return from a 14-game absence caused by sciatica, the coach said the offense has featured too many “random possessions”; the Lakers are 8-5 in James’ 13 appearances.
Los Angeles will try to halt its slide Sunday when it opens a four-game homestand against the Sacramento Kings.
