Oklahoma City Thunder guard and reigning NBA MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander will be out of the lineup until after the All-Star break because of an abdominal strain, the team announced Wednesday.
The injury will keep him off the court for a minimum of five games, starting with Wednesday’s road contest against the San Antonio Spurs. The Thunder said the 27-year-old will be re-evaluated once the break concludes.
Gilgeous-Alexander has also been ruled out of the new three-team All-Star Game, where he had been slated to play for Team World.
He took the floor Tuesday despite being listed as questionable with a right index finger sprain and an illness, contributing 20 points and nine assists in a 128-92 win over the Orlando Magic. A free throw with 2:14 remaining extended his streak of 20-point performances to 121, leaving him five games short of Wilt Chamberlain’s NBA record of 126.
The Thunder will continue to monitor Gilgeous-Alexander’s recovery during the upcoming break.
