HOUSTON — Houston Rockets guard Fred VanVleet says a frustrated sports bettor once approached him during a church service to complain about a lost wager tied to the player’s performance.
VanVleet recounted the episode in remarks published Tuesday, explaining that the unidentified man confronted him after the service and blamed the guard for ruining his bet. According to VanVleet, the bettor displayed visible anger before leaving the building.
The 29-year-old guard did not specify when the encounter occurred, but said the setting — a place of worship — underscored how legalized sports betting has changed interactions between athletes and fans.
VanVleet joined the Rockets in 2023 after seven seasons with the Toronto Raptors. He currently averages double figures in points and assists for Houston.
