Houston — Houston Rockets center Alperen Sengun publicly apologized on Feb. 7 after directing an offensive comment at a female referee, according to the New York Post.
In a statement released the same day, the 23-year-old expressed regret for his words and said he takes full responsibility for the incident. “My behavior was unacceptable,” Sengun said, adding that he has “great respect for all officials” and is committed to showing that respect moving forward.
The team acknowledged the apology but did not disclose whether additional disciplinary action would follow. The NBA had not announced any league-level punishment as of early Friday.
The remark in question was made during a recent game; details of the exchange were not revealed. Sengun, a third-year center from Turkey, has been a key contributor for Houston this season, averaging 21.4 points and 9.5 rebounds per game.
