The National Basketball Players Association publicly challenged the NBA on Tuesday, criticizing the league’s decision to place Charlotte Hornets guard Terry Rozier on unpaid leave while he is investigated for a possible gambling violation.

In a statement released Oct. 29, the union said the unpaid status “violates the spirit of the collective bargaining agreement” and vowed to pursue all options to protect Rozier’s salary and benefits during the inquiry.

Rozier was removed from team activities last week after the NBA opened an internal review into alleged wagers connected to league games. Under NBA rules, players and league personnel are prohibited from betting on NBA contests.

The NBPA argued that any discipline should wait until the investigation is finished, calling the league’s action “premature and unwarranted.”

The NBA has not provided a timetable for completing its review, and neither Rozier nor the Hornets have issued public comments on the matter.
