Oklahoma City, Mar. 31, 2026 — One night after other NBA voices amplified the league’s MVP conversation, Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander chose to stay quiet. Fresh off a 47-point outburst that pushed Oklahoma City past the Detroit Pistons 114-110 in overtime, the reigning MVP smiled at the subject and passed.

“I’m good. I let my game do the talking,” he said late Monday at Paycom Center.

Fourth-quarter takeover secures win

With starters Jalen Williams and Isaiah Hartenstein sidelined on the back end of a back-to-back, the Thunder trailed by seven inside four minutes. Gilgeous-Alexander returned with 6:57 left in regulation and either scored or assisted on all but one Oklahoma City basket the rest of the way, pouring in 21 points after that point. He finished 12-for-19 from the field and a career-high 21-for-25 at the line while adding two late assists on three-pointers.

The Pistons, first in the Eastern Conference but missing injured All-Stars Cade Cunningham and Jalen Duren, forced overtime when a potential game-winning step-back three from Gilgeous-Alexander was waved off for an offensive foul with four seconds left. Head coach Mark Daigneault said the group “re-centered” before closing out the extra period.

Opposing bench reactions

Pistons coach J.B. Bickerstaff repeatedly challenged calls during the night yet conceded Gilgeous-Alexander’s knack for earning whistles. “Twenty-five free throws — that’s hard to overcome,” he said. “Manipulating the rules is a skill.”

MVP chatter swirls elsewhere

The conversation around the award intensified last week when San Antonio rookie Victor Wembanyama laid out his case and Los Angeles Lakers coach JJ Redick publicly backed Luka Doncic. Sportsbook DraftKings currently lists Gilgeous-Alexander as the favorite at –300, followed by Wembanyama (+225) and Doncic (+1500).

Daigneault declined to campaign. “Voters take it seriously. We focus on what we can control,” he said. Veteran forward Alex Caruso echoed that sentiment: “Just watch the games.”

Gilgeous-Alexander is averaging 31.6 points, second only to Doncic, while shooting a personal-best 55.3% and dishing 6.5 assists. Oklahoma City owns the NBA’s top record at 60-16 despite multiple injuries across the rotation.

The Thunder visit the Houston Rockets on Wednesday.
