Denver Nuggets forward Cameron Johnson will miss at least four to six weeks after a bone bruise and hyperextension in his right knee, according to sources familiar with the situation.

An MRI performed Wednesday showed no structural damage, but the 29-year-old will be reevaluated in early February. Johnson was hurt during the fourth quarter of Tuesday night’s 107-99 loss to the Dallas Mavericks, limped to the bench, and did not return. The team initially announced the injury as a right knee sprain.

Johnson, acquired from the Brooklyn Nets in an offseason trade for Michael Porter Jr., is averaging 11.7 points across 30.6 minutes per game.

His absence leaves Denver without three of its opening-night starters. Aaron Gordon remains out with a Grade 2 right hamstring strain suffered Nov. 21 against the Houston Rockets; the forward is posting career bests of 18.8 points per game and 44.4% from three-point range. Christian Braun has been sidelined since Nov. 12 with an ankle sprain that is expected to keep him out at least six weeks. Braun, a key perimeter defender, averaged 11.4 points, 4.4 rebounds and 3.0 assists in the Nuggets’ first 11 contests.

Denver, the defending NBA champion, fell to 14-11 after Tuesday’s defeat in Dallas.
