DENVER — Free agent point guard Tyus Jones has agreed to a deal with the Denver Nuggets, agent Kevin Bradbury of LIFT Sports Management told ESPN on Monday.
The 29-year-old joins Denver as an experienced reserve behind Jamal Murray for the remainder of the season and will be eligible for the postseason roster.
Jones began his 11th NBA campaign with the Orlando Magic on a one-year contract, was traded to the Charlotte Hornets, and then moved to the Dallas Mavericks at February’s trade deadline. Dallas waived him Saturday to open a roster spot for two-way guard Ryan Nembhard.
In eight games with the Mavericks, Jones averaged 8.1 assists per 36 minutes and posted a 6.0 assist-to-turnover ratio, the league’s third-best mark during that span, according to ESPN Research.
Denver’s bench ranks near the bottom of the league in playmaking, producing just 6.5 assists per game — ahead of only the Houston Rockets and Los Angeles Lakers.
Jones enjoyed his most productive years with the Memphis Grizzlies in 2021-22 and 2022-23, receiving Sixth Man of the Year consideration while averaging 9.5 points and 4.8 assists across 153 appearances.
This season he is recording career lows in scoring (3.1 points per game), field-goal accuracy (34.9 percent) and three-point shooting (28.1 percent).
Once officially signed, Jones is expected to provide steady ball-handling and game management for Denver’s second unit as the reigning champions push toward another playoff run.
