Next for LeBron James: what could shape his 2026-27 destination

LOS ANGELES — A decision that could shift the NBA’s landscape began on June 29, 2025, when Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul told ESPN’s Shams Charania that LeBron James would pick up his $52.6 million player option for 2025-26 with the Los Angeles Lakers.

That choice placed the 41-year-old superstar on track for unrestricted free agency in the summer of 2026 with no contractual safety net — a first in his 23-season career. Since Paul’s announcement, league executives have debated whether 2025-26 will be James’ last year in uniform or simply his last in purple and gold. The discussion will intensify Tuesday when the Lakers host the Cleveland Cavaliers, one of several clubs monitoring his status.

Will he keep playing?

James already holds NBA records for seasons played (24 next fall), games played and career points. Sciatica delayed the start of his current season, and daily maintenance remains exhaustive. Yet after a midseason surge that lifted Los Angeles to third in the Western Conference, those close to him believe his body and spirits point toward playing at 42. James, however, has offered no timetable, saying during All-Star Weekend, “When I know, you guys will know.”

The money question

Club officials say the biggest unknown is salary. If James stays with the Lakers, they can offer up to the maximum thanks to his Bird rights. Should he leave, the spectrum runs from a minimum contract—which would make him accessible to any roster—to the full mid-level exception near $15 million, or a sign-and-trade that would require cap-maneuvering teams to remain below the first tax apron.

Timing also matters. A decision made after the Lakers’ postseason exit, before free agency opens on June 30, or deep into August would dramatically affect which franchises still have room or roster spots.

Leading scenarios

Lakers

Los Angeles will enter the offseason with about $50 million in projected cap space once James and Rui Hachimura fall off the books, assuming player options for Deandre Ayton and Marcus Smart are exercised. Management wants to re-sign Luka Doncic’s backcourt partner Austin Reaves—who will decline his $14.9 million option—along with Jaxson Hayes, Luke Kennard and possibly Hachimura. How much of that room James demands will guide the club’s approach.

Off the court, his family and businesses are entrenched in Southern California. Bronny James holds a partially guaranteed deal with the Lakers for next season, while daughter Zhuri and wife Savannah live in the newly renovated Brentwood home. Several league sources also cite the region’s weather and golf courses as under-appreciated perks.

Warriors

Golden State offers star power and familiarity. James shared four straight Finals with Stephen Curry and Steve Kerr from 2015-18 and teamed with them for Olympic gold in 2024, forging what Kerr called a “bromance.” Close friend Draymond Green and rehabbing forward Jimmy Butler III headline a roster that could position James a short flight from Los Angeles while delivering marquee appeal, even if scouts debate the on-court fit.

Cavaliers

The hometown storyline remains compelling. Multiple Cleveland and league insiders told ESPN the Cavs would facilitate a third stint if James wants it, potentially through a sign-and-trade that could, for instance, send Jarrett Allen (owed $90.7 million over three years) to Los Angeles. Returning to the Eastern Conference could simplify the playoff path and provide the most nostalgic venue for a possible farewell tour.

Knicks

Madison Square Garden, James’ favorite arena, offers bright-lights intrigue. New York’s front office must weigh the cost of reshaping a core of Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, OG Anunoby and Mikal Bridges for what might be a single LeBron season. Long-time connections include team president Leon Rose, ex-agent; executive William “World Wide Wes” Wesley; and assistant coach Mike Brown.

Nuggets

Several executives label Denver the best basketball fit alongside three-time MVP Nikola Jokić. A sign-and-trade could bring Peyton Watson (restricted) or sharpshooter Cameron Johnson ($23 million expiring) to the Lakers. Nuggets president Josh Kroenke courted James in 2018, and assistant coach Jared Dudley remains a close friend.

Clippers

While James scoffed at playing what he called “a road game” in the Clippers’ Intuit Dome during All-Star Weekend, an unforeseen scenario exists. If the NBA voids Kawhi Leonard’s contract over an endorsement-related investigation, cap room could open for a higher LeBron salary. Coach Tyronn Lue, who won a title with James in 2016, still maintains strong ties.

Whether James stays in Los Angeles or heads elsewhere, the league expects his choice — and the timing of it — to dominate conversation until pen meets paper or he formally retires.
