NEW YORK, Mar. 24, 2026 — The National Basketball Players Association publicly admonished the Milwaukee Bucks on Tuesday, accusing the franchise of undermining the NBA’s integrity by considering a season-ending shutdown for All-Star forward Giannis Antetokounmpo.

The union’s statement cited the league’s Player Participation Policy, designed to curb tanking, and asserted that Antetokounmpo is “healthy and ready to play.” It warned that fans, broadcasters and “the integrity of the game itself” will suffer if owners are not held accountable under anti-tanking rules.

Sources told ESPN last week that Antetokounmpo declined Milwaukee’s request to sit out the remainder of the schedule. According to those sources, the two-time MVP believes returning to action will not increase his injury risk.

The Bucks announced on Mar. 15 that Antetokounmpo was sidelined with a hyperextended left knee and bone bruise sustained after a dunk against the Indiana Pacers. No timetable was released, but sources indicated he would miss at least one week.

Antetokounmpo, 31, has already missed 35 games this season, the highest total of his career. Milwaukee is 12-23 without him and 17-19 when he plays.

At 29-42, the Bucks sit 11th in the Eastern Conference, eight games behind the Charlotte Hornets for the final play-in berth. Asked last week whether the benefits of Antetokounmpo’s return outweigh potential injury risks, head coach Doc Rivers replied, “I don’t have the answer, but it’s a very good question.”

The NBPA said it hopes to work with the league on “meaningful new proposals” aimed at discouraging tanking.
