The NBA expects Memphis Grizzlies star guard Ja Morant to be available on Sunday when the team concludes its two-game Europe series against the Orlando Magic at London’s O2 Arena. Morant sat out Thursday’s opener in Berlin because of soreness in his right calf.

Commissioner Adam Silver, speaking before Thursday’s tipoff, said he remained hopeful the two-time All-Star would take the court in the British capital. “I know he has a tremendous following globally,” Silver said. “I wish he were able to play tonight. I’m still holding out hope he’ll be able to play when we’re in London on Sunday.”

The Grizzlies listed Morant as out for the Berlin game on Wednesday’s injury report. Under league rules, an updated report for the London matchup is expected Saturday, when the club is likely to announce a final decision on his status.

Morant’s absence comes amid ongoing trade speculation surrounding the 26-year-old guard. Memphis entered Thursday at 17-22, 10th in the Western Conference and seven games behind sixth place, the last guaranteed playoff spot.

Asked Wednesday about his future with the franchise, Morant declined to address potential trade discussions. He is earning approximately $39.4 million this season, the third year of a five-year, $197.2 million contract, and is averaging 19.0 points and 7.6 assists. Over his career, he has averaged 22.4 points and 7.4 assists.
