RIGA, Latvia — Germany captured its first EuroBasket championship in 32 years on Sunday, edging Turkey 88-83 behind a decisive six-point flurry from Dennis Schroder in the final 75 seconds.
The Sacramento Kings guard drove for a layup with 1:15 remaining to give Germany a one-point advantage, knocked down a jumper at the 18.7-second mark and sealed the result with two free throws after Alperen Sengun’s potential tying three-pointer rimmed out.
Schroder closed with 16 points and 12 assists and was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. Isaac Bonga paced Germany with 20 points, while Franz Wagner added 18. The Germans finished the event 9-0, adding the continental title to last year’s FIBA World Cup triumph.
Sengun led all scorers with 28 points for Turkey, which also received 23 from Cedi Osman and 13 from Shane Larkin, who contributed nine assists and six rebounds. The championship game featured 15 lead changes and 11 ties before Germany secured its first EuroBasket gold since 1993.
