Burnaby, British Columbia — Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd said Wednesday that center Daniel Gafford will miss approximately two to three weeks after suffering an ankle sprain during the team’s first training-camp practice on Tuesday.
The timetable casts doubt on Gafford’s availability for the Mavericks’ Oct. 22 regular-season opener against the San Antonio Spurs.
This is the second significant injury for the 26-year-old in eight months. Gafford sat out the final two months of the 2024-25 campaign after a Grade 3 MCL sprain in his right knee on Feb. 10.
Since being acquired just before the 2023 trade deadline, Gafford has averaged 11.9 points on 72.7 percent shooting, 6.8 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks while sharing starting duties with Dereck Lively II. He agreed to a three-year, $54 million contract extension during the offseason.
Forward P.J. Washington missed Wednesday’s session after bumping his head. Kidd said Washington could be back on the court following the team’s scheduled day off Thursday.
